Sunny weekend
What a fantastic weekend! I hope that Spring has sprung, and I can spend much more time on the lottie from now on.
Unfortunately I was busy on Saturday, which was the best day of the weekend, but I got down to the plot on Sunday morning, and managed to get some work done. I cleared the new onion bed, added some chicken poo and planted my onion sets. These only took up half the space I was expecting, so I planted a single row of spinach in the bed as well, and intend to do more 'successional' sowings in the coming weeks. I also tried sowing a row of carrots amongst my garlic (which is doing well), as I have been told this helps against carrot fly. We'll see, I am still going to erect a barrier around the bed as well.
I also started forking over the bed for the broad beans, and moved the half dozen plants remaining from my largely failed Autumn sowing to their new home. It won't be too long before the plants I have growing in Rootrainers join them, as they are developing quickly.
I also finally made a start on the un-cultivated ground at the far end of my plot. Having resided under black plastic for nearly a year the weeds have died right back, with only the very persistent brambles trying to find their way to the light. In an hour I only managed to dig about a sixth of the area, but in that time filled my large tub trug with bramble and bindweed roots! After the hour I was knackered so left it there - little and often will be the only way! The first bed I dig will probably be home to my butternut squash, and maybe some pumpkins, once I've incorporated some manure.
Seeds planted:
Onion sets: Setton (improved turbo)
Spinach: Campania F1 hybrid
Carrots: Early Nantes 2
